What you need to know about Physical Therapy

by BlogHealth

Physical therapy is an ancient method of treating diseases and a very effective and efficient way to treat them without the use of medicines. It is basically treatment of pain, disease, or injury by physical means, and is also termed as “physiotherapy”.

Physical therapy or physiotherapy is a branch of rehabilitative medicine aimed at helping patients maintain, recover or improve their physical abilities. Physical therapists study medical science subjects, including anatomy, neuroscience and physiology in order to acquire the health education needed for prevention, diagnosis, treatment.

It is a very important knowledge which everyone should know of, because in many cases physiotherapy can be given as first aid. And it is something easy to learn and if learned properly every home can have a doctor at times of emergencies. It is something that just requires patience and skill and just imagine the treatment can be done without spending a single penny!

But a very important thing that can be taken as “statutory warning” is that if done in a wrong way it can sometimes prove to be disastrous and painful as well.

physical therapy

According to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, UK:

“Physiotherapy is science-based, committed to extending, applying, evaluating and reviewing the evidence that underpins and informs its practice and delivery. The exercise of clinical judgment and informed interpretation is at its core.”

Physical therapy helps people get back to full strength and movement in key parts of the body after an illness or injury. Physical therapy doesn’t just help a person rebuild strength and range of motion, though — it also can help someone manage pain, whether that pain is caused by bad posture, an injury, or a disease like arthritis.

There are different types of physical therapy.

These may include:

1: orthopedic,

2: acute care,

3: post-operative care,

4: cardiovascular and pulmonary rehab,

5: lymphedema management, wound care, and

6: neurologic rehabilitation.

Five common areas of specialization in physical therapy are:

1: Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation physical therapy:

This deals with patients who have a disease or disorder of the heart, patients with pulmonary problems and circulatory system. Helps people who have just recovered from a heart attack, bypass surgery or chronic pulmonary diseases.

2: Orthopedic physical therapy:

The orthopedic physical therapist treats injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system. In simple words it deals with problems such as sports injuries, post operative joints, amputations etc.

3: Pediatric physical therapy:

As the name suggests, pediatric physical therapy deals with treating children with various diseases and disorders like e.g. Cerebral palsy.

4: Neurological physical therapy:

This kind of therapy is mainly concerned with the disorders in our nervous system. It includes disorders like stroke, walking disabilities, vision impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, paralysis etc

5: Geriatric physical therapy:

Geriatric physical therapy basically aims at physical disorders in older adults. It treats diseases such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Cancer, Joint replacement, Balance problems etc

Hi Temilola,

Nicely explained post about physical therapy 🙂

Yes indeed, we better know this as physiotherapy, and there is a lot written about it and people do follow it up, mostly after surgery at our end.

My MIL recently underwent heart surgery and was advised the first one you mentioned and is feeling much better now. These are needed to get your strength and body back in shape for better health.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day ahead 🙂

Hi Temilola,

Great blog you have here. I know first hand Physical therapy is very beneficial, having strained myself and managing to get a nerve trapped in my shoulder which was both painful and very uncomfortable.

It took many sessions to put it right in my case, but I am happy to say it did eventually correct my problem 🙂

If you don’t currently exercise and aren’t very active during the day, any increase in exercise or physical activity is good for you. Aerobic physical activity any activity that causes a noticeable increase in your heart rate is especially beneficial for disease prevention.

Well informed article. Physical therapy does have a lot of different benefits but it doesn’t cure everything. When I suffered from chronic back pain, physical therapy helped me manage my back pain but it never eliminated the pain. It took a pain relief treatment to end my pain for good. For the most part, physical therapy can help you. For a few, you may need more. Informative article for sure.

I really appreciated what you said about every home having someone who can give physiotherapist aid. It would be extremely helpful to have that kind of help at home. It could be a fun way to bond as a family too. We can learn it together. Thanks for sharing.

As someone who has been through physical therapy, You learn a lot of these things while you recover. Doing all your exercise is really important because we need to strengthen everything. I know people who didn’t do them all and they are less flexible due to skipping exercise.

Thanks for helping to promote Physiotherapy and inform the public on what physiotherapists do. I am an orthopaedic physiotherapist working in downtown Toronto. One of the most common misconceptions about physiotherapy that people I see tell me is that they didn’t realize that they could see a physiotherapist without a doctors referral. In general, across North America, physiotherapists are primary care providers which mean that they are a first point of contact provider and you do need a referral from a physician to see them. As an orthopaedic physiotherapist, I help people with their musculoskeletal issues and we encourage our patients to see a physiotherapist right away if they are experiencing any aches or pains that are originating from the joints, muscles, bones etc.The longer you wait, the longer it can take to treat the pain. Make sure you find a trusted physiotherapist near you to keep you body in tip top shape!

Finding the right physical therapist can make a big difference in healing your body pains. Most experts believe that a therapist should have confidence, optimistic, and have at least 5 years experience in the job. In addition, they must be very kind towards their patients.

Huh, I didn’t know physiotherapy could be used to treat osteoporosis. I may have to look into that. What goes into a typical geriatric physiotherapy session? Is it largely stretching and applying pressure?

Nice post.Thanks for sharing.
But i do have an issue with this paragraph.”it is a very important knowledge which everyone should know of, because in many cases physiotherapy can be given as first aid. And it is something easy to learn and if learned properly every home can have a doctor at times of emergencies. It is something that just requires patience and skill and just imagine the treatment can be done without spending a single penny!”
I know it might be unintentional but readers might mistake that for meaning physiotherapy is the same as first aid.first aid can be taken as a short course but not physiotherapy because if it were that easy to learn,it wouldn’t take 5 years to study for it in Nigeria and physiotherapists wouldnt be earning as much as they do in some parts of the world, including Nigeria.
Also,we have patients who come to the clinic to report that they had been treated by people who claim to be physiotherapists (but just know a little about first aid and massage) that have made their conditions even worse.
Do make necessary changes or send me an email. Thank you

Very informative post! And finding the right physical therapist makes all the difference during the recovery process. I’ve had physical therapy before for my ankle and my physical therapist helped me get back to complete normal and strengthen my ankle! Thanks for sharing!

I appreciate that you included here how orthopaedic physical therapy is usually for injuries related to sports. It’s been almost a year since my son started playing basketball and he has already experienced his very first sprain. Maybe getting a home physical therapy for him can help him recover faster because he is quite eager to catch up on his training in order to be able to join the varsity team in his school.
