Diabetes Affects More Than Just Your Blood Sugar

Diabetes Affects More Than Just Your Blood Sugar

Diabetes is often misunderstood in society. We assume it’s developed because people eat too much candy. We believe that if people just never at candy again, they would be fine. Diabetes is a lot more than mismanagement of food, it’s our bodies inability to function properly and results in blood sugar issues. We have websites, like USAMedicalSurgical.com, that provide the standard blood sugar testing supplies. However, diabetes will attack various other body parts and can cause major issues in the long run. Those same sites can supply you with your needs for other problems but you need to educate yourself first on common problem areas so that you can combat them early on.

Protect Your Eyes

One of the most common side effects of diabetes is eye problems. In most cases, the blood vessels swell and leak in the retina. In more rare cases, glaucoma can be a result of diabetes as well. Often high blood pressure will play a role so do monitor your blood pressure along with your blood sugar. If these issues go untreated, it can result in blindness! We want you to see as much as you can during your life’s journey.

Love Your Kidneys

Your kidneys work hard to help maintain a healthy body and not treating diabetes will lead to kidney damage. This usually takes some time to build up and when it does, it will release waste and fluids into your body rather than expel them. If you have high blood pressure and high cholesterol in conjunction with diabetes, you are at a much higher risk for kidney issues. Monitoring your health regularly with a doctor and at home with medical supplies is always a great idea.

Don’t Lose Your Last Nerve

The nervous system is often targeted by diabetes when it’s untreated. Patients will experience tingling, numbness, and sometimes a burning sensation. It can have a profound effect on your everyday life. It can make typing, writing, and eating difficult. It can make having sex extremely difficult. Even walking can become an issue. Nerve damage often is a result of consistently too high of blood sugar in the body and once the damage is done, it cannot be reversed. It is imperative that you maintain a healthy diet, stay on your insulin treatments, and routinely exercise to prevent nerve damage from taking place.

Let Things Circulate Properly

Circulation is a big issue for a lot of diabetics. It can be a result of nerve damage that has already taken place. The important thing is to maintain healthy circulation in the body so that you can avoid the dreaded amputation that can occur from lack of treatment. You may need some diabetic socks, shoes, and routine foot massages to avoid the issue. Of course, testing your blood sugar and watching your blood pressure will also help.

Loving Your Skin

Another big issue for diabetics is the nature of slow healing that can take place. Minor cuts, bruises, and bruises will take longer and can leave scars. In some cases, the patient may contract a bacterial infection while trying to recover from a wound. Extra protection to your body with band-aids, triple antibiotic ointments, and additional cleansing will help the diabetic heal in time and avoid unnecessary infections.

Watch The Heart

Diabetes and heart disease are closely linked and many patients who develop diabetes will also develop heart disease. Diabetes can cause high blood pressure and is often linked with high cholesterol. The patient who develops diabetes has a much higher risk for heart attacks. It is extremely important to change your diet and monitor your blood pressure regularly for improving heart health.

The important thing about diabetes is to take care of yourself so that you can minimize the effects and possibly reverse some of your symptoms. Using medical aids, taking your medications correctly, maintaining a healthy diet, and exercising regularly can help. Have a close relationship with your doctor so they are aware of what you are doing and to keep you motivated in the right direction. Diabetes does not have to be a final sentence!
