Common Addictions and Disorders and Treatment Types

Addictions and other disorders affect millions of people and their families. A variety of these exist, and several treatment methods are available for each one. The following are examples of some of the methods and what you can do if you or a beloved one is suffering from such a problem.

Opioid Addiction

Opioid addiction affects millions of people and is a huge epidemic in various places around the world. It’s a physical and mental attachment to narcotic pills such as Percocet, Vicodin and so forth. Recovery plans include inpatient and outpatient drug treatment programs, group counseling, individual therapy, medicinal withdrawal therapy, environmental changes and in-depth therapies that seek to expose the problem’s root.

Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a problem that is almost as widespread as opioid addiction. It’s the same kind of illness except the affected person develops an addiction to drinking substances instead of opiates. The substances range from beer to hard liquor. Over time, a habit forms, and the individual drinks frequently and in higher volumes each time. The best treatment for alcohol addiction is an inpatient program that can provide medical care while the individual is detoxing. After detoxification, the person can receive counseling or help from a 12-step program that can assist the person in getting his or her life back on track.

Bulimia

Bulimia is an eating disorder that occurs commonly in people with low self-esteem. Such people eat food and then feel the need to purge it because of a false sense of obesity and a distorted sense of looks. They usually purge the food by forcing its upheaval, through the use of laxatives is not uncommon. Recovery plans for bulimia include group or individual counseling and behavior modification therapy. In severe cases, it can include hospitalization until the body regains its internal balance.
Anorexia
Anorexia stems from the same kind of self-esteem issues as bulimia. The affected party does not believe that he or she is attractive and usually has a false sense of being “too fat.” The biggest difference between anorexia and bulimia is that an anorexic person will refuse to eat whereas a bulimic person will eat and then try to purge the food. Both conditions can cause severe health issues and nutritional problems. Untreated cases can result in the death of the affected person. The same type of recovery plans can be used for both types of victims. These persons need to know that they are beautiful the way they are and that it’s okay to eat and nourish themselves. The best type of help is in a one-on-one environment where a therapist can help the person delve into his or her past try to discover what distorted the self-perception originally.

Cutting

Cutting is an emotional disorder in which a person does not have a healthy outlet for pain. The individual may deal with love loss, bullying, abuse and other challenges by cutting his or her skin and drawing blood. The outward injuries reflect the injuries the person feels on the inside. Many teenagers develop this habit and have difficulty stopping. The first step in the whole process of resolving any addiction is admitting that it exists. A support system that consists of family, friends and caring individuals is important for a cutter. Group therapy is an excellent tool for this type of disorder as well because it lets the cutter know that he or she is not alone. Millions of teens cut, but many of them find their way back to serenity and self-love.
Help is there if you suffer from any of the previously mentioned conditions. You just have to reach out for it, and you will receive it. A bright future is sure to come once you do.
