Berries Slow Down The Mental Decline of Aging
In the latest research published in the Annals of Neurology, it was suggested that eating of berry will slow down memory loss when one is aging. Women who ate berries more frequently over two decades showed a slower decline in brain functions like memory and attention as they got older than those who had the fruits less often. Blueberries and strawberries are rich in a type of flavonoid called anthocyanidins, which are known to cross from the blood into the brain and locate in the parts involved in learning and memory, said lead study author Elizabeth Devore. Flavonoids also may help mitigate the effects of stress and inflammation that could contribute to cognitive decline, she said. More studies are needed to confirm the findings, she said
Berries contain a particular flavonoid called anthocyanidin. Devore said anthocyanidin helps give berries their rich colors, and it’s found in fruits such as raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, elderberries, and red and concord grapes.
In a similar study elsewhere it was also found that eating blueberries and strawberries appear to help women stay sharp as they age and experts think men can benefit, too. “We think it’s an exciting finding because it is such a simple dietary intervention people can do. Given that we know that fruits and vegetables are good for our health in general, our findings add to the idea that we should be consuming more, especially berries, as a way to help maintain memory in older ages
In the study, they found that while berries appeared to help memory the most, other foods rich in flavonoids such as tea, onions and red wine, may also be helpful for memory, Devore said. Flavonoids help protect the body’s cells from damage and reduce inflammation. “Flavonoids, which are antioxidants found in berries, apples, citrus fruits, tea, red wine, and onions, have been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancers,
Though it can’t be said that an increased consumption of berries might be solely important or helping the brain functioning, it can definitely tend to help in keeping the mental health of a person sound for a longer time. It might surely prove to be a major help for the body. The antioxidants present in the berries might be really helpful in fighting the brain degeneration function which takes place over the years. This is one of the lighter foods that can help in safeguarding one’s health against diseases such as dementia in the long run. This is one very cost-effective system of building one’s immunity as well.
Berries have already been known to contain antioxidants, which help slow the signs of aging, and serve as an anti-inflammatory, which helps decrease some of the pains associated with older age. Here’s how berries might help: mitochondria are energy generators of brain cells, and have been thought to also produce substances toxic to the brain that lead to Alzheimer’s disease. The magic bullet in berries may be a certain kind of flavonoid known as anthocyanidins, which cross the blood-brain barrier. They have also been found in the regions of the brain involved with learning and memory. Berries are particularly high in a type of flavonoid called anthocyanidins, which can cross the blood-brain barrier to areas of learning and memory.
A greater intake of anthocyanidins and total flavonoids was also associated with reduced memory decline. They found a greater intake of anthocyanidins and total flavonoids was also associated with less cognitive deterioration. Experts believe that stress and inflammation contribute to dementia and that flavonoids could help counter the effect, according to a report in the Annals of Neurology journal. Experts believe the benefits are derived from the high content of flavonoids in berry fruits, antioxidant compounds found in plants which can protect against a wide range of diseases.
What is your thought about berries, considering the nonavailability of this particular fruits for the poor, is like only the rich will have it to their advantage, it then means low-income earners will find it difficult to take much berries and thus this research seems to favor the rich. I love to hear your opinion and as you do, God bless you.
